Post-conceptual Practices from the Early 20th Century to the Present

This course will examine pre-conceptual to post-conceptual artists practices with a focus on highly interdisciplinary and intermedia approaches to art making from the early 20th century to the present. Artists & movements to be discussed include art and technology in post-soviet Eastern Europe, Arte Povera, Viennese Actionism, Conceptualism, the aesthetics of disturbance & experimental theater, the language poets, Li Binyuan, Philipp Gehmacher, Cally Spooner, Lee Lozano, Roger Hiorns, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Jade Guanaro Kuriki-Olivo (Puppies Puppies), Magdalena Forster, Martin Creed, Ghislaine Leung, Cameron Rowland, Maurizio Bolognini, John Cage, Anri Sala, Samson Young, Gaylen Gerber, Andrea Fraser, Arvo Pärt, Daniel Turner, Susan Philipsz, Doris Salcedo, Jason Dodge, Rebecca Horn, Michael E. Smith, and many more. The course will consider how these practices intersect with various theoretical frameworks including but not limited to: institutional critique, post-structuralism, Marxism, material philosophy, politics and the historical contexts in which these artists and movements exist/ed. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, and studio visits, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the historical and contemporary significance of conceptual and post-conceptual art practices as well as, hopefully, a deeper understanding of their own.
